“In my paintings, I would like to express the beauty of landscapes through different light conditions and different approaches to interpretation of color in real life. I would like not to merely pick up the colors from the natural environment but to reinvent them right on my canvas. By using this approach I’m trying to achieve liquid quality of natural light in a landscape or natural setting. In particular, I’m interested in architectural elements and their integration through light conditions.”

Irena will conduct a 1 day workshop at the Plymouth Center for the Arts.
Most often, watercolor is considered a light-to-dark medium. But in this one-day workshop, Irena will show students how to challenge that approach! We will learn how to achieve instant atmosphere in our paintings by establishing the background first, and maximize the value scale by leaving foreground details for last. Glowing watercolors are within reach!
Irena Roman is a transparent watercolorist from Scituate, MA. She holds a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and an MFA from Syracuse University. Irena achieved Signature Status from the American Watercolor Society in 2012 and has been honored in the AWS International Exhibition with a High Winds Medal (2011), the Ralph Smith Memorial Award (2012), and a Silver Medal of Honor (2022) and Dolphin Fellowship status.
She’s twice received the Watercolor West Award from The National Watercolor Society, as well as four Gold Medals and two Silver Medals from the New England Watercolor Society. She’s holds signature membership with the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, the New England Watercolor Society, the Watercolor Honor Society, and American Women Artists.
In order to benefit from this workshop, some previous watercolor experience is helpful but beginners are welcome. Supply list and syllabus will be available
