FIRST PLACE AWARD:
"The Old Pine Tree" by Evelyn Dunphy
“When I first saw this painting, it grabbed my eye. I felt the scene—the blue snow on the tree with the light shining through. The cool blues, contrasting with the warm lights, combined with the daring size, make this a first place award winner.”
SECOND PLACE AWARD:
"Low Tide" by Patricia Stimpson
“This work is beautiful in all aspects of the criteria I use to judge a painting. Great composition, light and darks, and pleasing color selection. The use of shadows under the pier and the lightness of the water makes this a strong painting.”
THIRD PLACE AWARD:
"Wayne" by Irena Roman
“This is a beautifully painted work., so realistically rendered. It looks like he is going to jump out of the frame.”
The Marilyn Sabin Memorial Award for Excellence in Transparent Media:
"Race Day" by Christine Coombs
“The artist captured the moment beautifully. Wonderful composition with the use of shapes and angles to make us look at more. Very impressive use of white. Very well-executed painting.”
The Vermont Community Foundation Alden and Mary Bryan Award for Traditional Landscape, Seascape or Cityscape:
"Stormy Seas" by Wendy Hale
“This kind of seascape is not easy to portray. There is so much movement and great use of light and darks. Close up, it is almost abstract, but standing back, it is a stormy sea. Beautifully rendered painting!”
The Loring Coleman Memorial Award:
"Wild Kingdom" by Ann Hart
“This just grabbed my eye. In looking at this painting, my first thought was ”the color!”, and “this frog is so cute”; but the garden is every bit as impressive as the frog. This artist combined the landscape with the big frog sitting right in front and with the skillful use of color leads us around and around. Long live the frog!”
The Mary Jo Rines Memorial Award for Innovation in Art:
"Blind But Seeing, or Seeing but Blind" by Peggi Habets
“This stands out from all the others as an innovative work. It is almost surreal. It gives you a lot to think about. The artist put things together to make this painting work beautifully. Innovative and creative!”
The Anne D. Sullivan Memorial Award for Excellence in Abstract Painting in Watercolor:
"Waves" by Judy Metcalfe
“The painting has a lot of movement and color movement and interesting shapes. I love to look at the aspects of color in this painting to see what is going on.”
The Bernice and Albert B. Cohen Memorial Award for Excellence in Light and Shadow:
"End of shift, Bethlehem Steel" by Carolyn Latanision
“When I looked at this painting, I thought immediately that the shovels were retired. It is a very quiet painting, with lights and darks working to highlight the center of interest. This painting makes the mundane shovel look very important. “
The Virginia Avery Memorial Award:
"Road to Taos" by Helen Hopkins Fountain
“I love the softness and simplicity of this painting. I have never been to Taos, but when I look at this painting and the title, I want to go to Taos.”
The Dynasty Premium Watercolor Brush Award:
"Arbiter’s Moon" by Jeff Iacovelli
“The detail in the painting is impressive. Every square inch, this person’s brush has touched.. I love the effort and patience it took to produce it. My heart warms to this painting when I look at it.”
The M. Graham Artists Watercolors Award:
"Out Where It’s Hot" by Peter Hussey
“This is such a wonderfully whimsical painting. The artist was having fun putting all of the colors together. A lot to look at! Such a fun painting!”
The Image Resolutions Award:
"PorCor Rail" by Robert O’Brien
“Strong composition. The artist had a great eye to balance the white “C” with the rest of the composition. Technically a superb painting.”
The Dick Blick Art Materials Award:
"Riverside in Fall" by Z.L. Feng
“A beautiful feeling of fall in this painting. Wonderful use of color”
The Utrecht Art Materials Award:
"Mangled and Tangled" by Joanne Donovan
