Congratulations to the Award Winners

It is an honor and privilege to be this year's judge for the New England Watercolor Society. The selection from approximately 500 paintings down to 60 was very difficult! The resulting exhibit of paintings is an excellent representation of the best of contemporary watercolor in America today: skilled, confident, creative, and expressive. The exhibiting artists have pushed the boundaries of our materials, explored new avenues of expression, visually communicated concepts and shown us another view of our world. This is the best of contemporary painting in any medium.

The most difficult task in judging an exhibition is choosing awards. Acknowledging that judging art is unavoidably a subjective task, there is an important set of objective criteria I certainly look for: content, composition, uniqueness of vision and skillful handling of medium. Any painting that holds all these qualities is certainly an award winner. Congratulations to all the artists exhibiting in the News regional exhibition and especially to the ten award winners.

  • 1st Prize - "No Left Turn" by Antonio Masi
How can an image so abstracted be so real?! Large shapes and spaces, contrasted with fine lines and artist's marks, a blur of color, a smudge of grey ...morphs into a massive street overpass, suggestions of industrial "lacework" and, all of a sudden, I see a car in motion which was previously just a blurry shape. I am transformed onto a gritty, busy city street...I can almost hear the horns honk and echo underneath the steel structure. Antonio Masi's painting, "No left turn", has all the ingredients for Best of Show: content, strong composition, uniqueness of vision and perfected handling of the medium.
  • 2nd Prize - "Dream Catcher" by James C. Varnum
Dream Catcher is a marvelously imaginative painting. It has wonderful energy and sense of motion that engages the viewer from across the room, then holds one's interest until, six inches away, we are being entertained by fine lines and details. This artist's individuality and expressiveness is refreshing.
  • 3rd Prize - "I Heart NY" by June Webster
Jewel colors, sparkling lights and dazzling reflections never made N.Y. City look so inviting. ... exaggeration of this night scene, in the rain, is a perfect vehicle to show off her strong personal style of painting, artistic vision and masterful handling of Watercolor. This painting sings! I guess it's "Singing in the rain!
